What is Sui?
Sui is a layer-1 blockchain built by Mysten Labs, a team of former Meta engineers led by Evan Cheng who worked on the Diem payments project. It attacks the throughput problem differently: rather than ordering every transaction globally, Sui models assets as objects, so transfers that touch unrelated objects skip full consensus entirely and finalize in well under a second, targeting games, payments, and high-frequency applications.
Programs on Sui are written in Move, the resource-oriented language Sam Blackshear created at Meta, adapted here into an object-centric dialect. The Mysticeti consensus protocol, which replaced Narwhal-Bullshark in 2024, orders transactions that do need agreement, while simple transfers use a faster broadcast path. Total supply is capped at 10 billion SUI, with allocations to investors and contributors unlocking on schedules stretching toward 2030; a storage fund compensates validators for state kept on chain.
Mainnet went live on May 3, 2023, following one of the better-funded launches of that cycle, with backers including a16z crypto and Jump. Sui grew through DeFi protocols like the native DeepBook order book, native USDC issuance, and a push into gaming with the SuiPlay handheld device. Entering 2026 it ranks among the larger alternative layer-1s, frequently compared with Aptos, its sibling from the Diem diaspora.
What moves the SUI price?
Token unlocks are the dominant SUI-specific factor: with 10 billion total supply and multi-year vesting for investors and early contributors, monthly unlock tranches expand float and are tracked closely by traders. DeFi total value locked, DEX volumes on DeepBook and Cetus, and stablecoin supply on the network provide the demand-side signals.
Ecosystem incidents and milestones move the token too: the May 2025 Cetus exploit, which drained over $200 million before a validator-coordinated freeze, hit sentiment hard, while native USDC issuance, gaming launches, and recurring US ETF speculation have lifted it. Like most alt layer-1s, SUI amplifies broader market swings in both directions.
Sui FAQ
What is Sui used for?
SUI pays gas fees, secures the network through delegated proof-of-stake, backs the storage fund that finances on-chain data, and votes on governance. The chain itself hosts DeFi exchanges, stablecoin payments, and games that exploit its sub-second finality, with objects like in-game items owned and transferred directly by users.
What is SUI’s token supply and unlock schedule?
Supply is capped at 10 billion SUI. A minority circulated at the May 2023 launch, with the remainder vesting to Mysten Labs, investors, the community reserve, and a foundation treasury on schedules that run into 2030. Regular unlock events add supply monthly, a dynamic traders monitor since it dilutes existing holders.
Is Sui a good investment in 2026?
Genuine strengths include fast finality, a credentialed engineering team, native USDC, and growing DeFi and gaming activity. Genuine risks include years of remaining token unlocks, competition from Solana and Aptos, and the 2025 Cetus exploit’s reminder that ecosystem security matters. Volatility is high.
