What is Sei?
Sei engineers its entire stack around one workload: trading. The chain optimizes block production, matching, and settlement so orderbook exchanges, NFT mints, and high-frequency DeFi behave more like centralized venues — finality lands in roughly 400 milliseconds. That answers a specific weakness of general-purpose chains, where swap-heavy traffic competes with every other application for the same congested blockspace.
Twin-Turbo consensus is the signature mechanism: intelligent block propagation gossips transaction identifiers ahead of full blocks, and optimistic block processing begins execution before votes finalize, compressing latency at both ends. Sei v2 added a parallelized EVM so Solidity contracts run concurrently when they touch disjoint state, with the Giga roadmap targeting far higher throughput. SEI stakes to validators, pays gas, and is capped at 10 billion tokens.
Jeff Feng and Jayendra Jog — formerly of Goldman Sachs and Robinhood respectively — founded Sei Labs and launched mainnet in August 2023 with backing from Jump and Multicoin. The chain first gained traction in NFT trading and gaming, then leaned into its EVM pivot to court DeFi liquidity, competing directly with Solana, Monad, and other parallel-execution chains for the low-latency niche.
What moves the SEI price?
Supply expansion has been SEI’s dominant technical factor: from a modest launch float, monthly unlocks to private investors, the team, and foundation reserves run for years, and the larger cliff dates have repeatedly aligned with drawdowns. Ecosystem incentive programs distribute still more tokens, so absorbing that flow requires demand growth to keep pace.
Usage metrics move the token when they inflect — the parallel-EVM launch in mid-2024, perpetual-futures listings, and gaming or NFT activity spikes each repriced SEI — and the chain tracks broader appetite for high-performance L1s versus Ethereum rollups. US ETF filings referencing SEI in 2025 layered a regulatory-flows narrative on top.
Sei FAQ
What is SEI used for?
SEI functions as gas for every transaction, the staking asset securing Sei’s proof-of-stake validator set, collateral and quote currency across native DeFi, and the governance token for protocol parameters. Because the chain targets exchange workloads, much of its utility shows up as trading-fee payment and validator delegation rather than contract deployment.
What are SEI’s tokenomics?
Total supply is capped at 10 billion SEI: roughly 48% sits in ecosystem and community reserves, 20% with the team, 20% with private investors, and the rest with the foundation and launchpool distributions, unlocking on schedules that extend years past launch. Staking rewards draw from those reserves rather than uncapped inflation.
Is Sei a good investment in 2026?
Points in Sei’s favor: measurable sub-second finality, a differentiated parallel EVM, and experienced founders with strong backers. Points against: heavy remaining unlocks, fierce competition from Solana and newer parallel chains, and application activity that has yet to lead the sector on a sustained basis. Both lists are factual; neither is financial advice.
Where can I buy SEI?
